Multidisciplinary team (MDT) care
Spinal care often benefits from a collaborative approach. At Total Spine Health, complex cases can be reviewed through a dedicated multidisciplinary team to support safe, well-informed decision-making.
Southern Spine Network
Collaborative spinal expertise
The Southern Spine Network is an independent multidisciplinary team bringing together experienced spinal surgeons, radiologists and allied specialists to review complex cases and support decision-making.
This approach allows for shared expertise, second opinions and careful planning, helping ensure that treatment recommendations are appropriate, evidence-based and patient-focused.

What is MDT care?
A more joined-up approach to spinal care
A multidisciplinary team (MDT) brings together specialists from different areas to review cases collectively. This may include spinal surgeons, radiologists and other relevant clinicians.
By discussing cases together, the aim is to improve diagnostic accuracy, reduce uncertainty and ensure that treatment decisions are carefully considered.
Why this matters
Improving safety and decision-making
- shared review of imaging and diagnosis
- access to specialist radiology input
- consideration of surgical and non-surgical options
- reduced risk of unnecessary or inappropriate procedures
- greater confidence in complex decision-making
Surgical planning and safety
Specialist collaboration for complex procedures
For certain procedures, particularly anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF), a collaborative approach is used to enhance safety.
Where appropriate, surgery is performed alongside a specialist vascular surgeon, Mr Benjamin Patterson, whose expertise supports safe access to the spine and reduces the risk of complications.
This reflects a commitment to careful planning and the use of appropriately experienced specialists for complex procedures.
If you would like your case assessed or discussed, you can arrange a consultation to begin the process.
